ギンコの過去が、今明かされます。
ギンコは子供の時は「ヨキ」と言う名で、母と一緒に行商の旅を続けていたようです。山の中で道に迷った二人は、土砂崩れに巻き込まれ、ヨキ一人が助かります。母の遺体の前でどうすることもできないヨキは、倒れているところをヌイに助けられました。
ヌイは白髪で片目が不自由な中年女。ぶっきらぼうな態度が冷たい印象を与えますが、身寄りのないヨキを家に置いてくれるだけで、ヨキにとっては頼るべき大人として映ったでしょう。子供が一人じゃ生きていけないし、一緒にいてくれて、住むところや食べ物を与えてくれるだけで、その恩と愛情を子供は感じ取るものです。
ヨキに尋ねられて、ヌイはこんな山の中で一人で暮らしているわけを語ります。
ヌイは蟲を引き寄せる体質のため、旅の蟲師をしていた。それでも足繁く尋ねる里には夫と子供がいて、ヌイの帰りを待っていたのでした。ある時里に帰ってみると夫と子供の行方が知れなくなる事件が起こり、それがこの沼に住む蟲、常闇とギンコが関わっていると突き止めますが、以来この場所で家族を捜しながら６年の月日を過ごしているということです。
６年。多分ヌイには、夫と子供はもう闇に消えたと分かっているのでしょう。その事実を受け入れるのに６年の月日を要したということです。
ヌイの話す常闇とギンコの秘密を知りたいヨキは、夜更けに沼をかき回し、常闇とギンコを目の当たりにします。そこで見たものは、白く色が透け、片目になった沼の魚が、もう片方の目も闇に包まれ消えていく姿。沼に片目の魚しかいなかったのは、両目が見えなくなると消えてしなうという事実でした。そしてギンコの光を浴びていると、いずれ両目が闇に冒されてしまうこと。
すべてを知ってしまったヨキに、ヌイはここから旅立つように言います。
「ここは私と常闇たちの場所。お前のいていい場所じゃない」。
過去にとらわれ続け、いずれ闇に消えてしまう運命のヌイは、若いヨキが頼れる大人である自分を慕うことで、自分と運命を共にすることはヨキのためにならないと考え、ここを出て行くように突き放したのでしょう。
ヨキと一緒に暖かい暮らしを送れたことで、家族が消えた事へのわだかまりが消え、運命どおり闇に消えることを受け入れることにしたのか、「これで、もう、いいよな」と呟いて消えていこうとするヌイ。
いったんは旅立ったヨキも、沼の異変に気づいて戻ってきます。溢れてくるヌイへの思いに、「行っちゃイヤだ！」と消えていくヌイの手を取って、ヨキは一緒に闇に包まれてしまいました。
驚いたヌイは、ヨキが自分に寄せる愛情を感じ、優しくヨキを諭します。
「この先は片目を閉じてお行き。ひとつはギンコにくれてやれ、常闇から抜け出すために。だがもうひとつは堅く閉じろ。また日の光を見るために」。
ヨキはまた倒れているところを村人に助けられます。今度は自分の名前以外のことはすべて忘れて。「常闇に捕らわれると自分が誰かも忘れてしまう。名を思い出せれば抜け出せるが、思い出せないときは何でもいいから名を付けたらいい。しかし、元の名前は忘れてしまう」以前、ヌイが語って聞かせたように、ヨキは自分の名をギンコとしか憶えていなかったようです。
髪は白髪になり、片目は闇のように暗く、蟲を寄せ付けるようになっていました。それ以後ギンコと名乗るようになり、助けてくれた村の家からは、蟲を寄せ付ける性質で迷惑をかけないようにこっそり抜け出し、各地を放浪して歩く蟲師となったのでした。
最後に助けられたときには、今のギンコの顔になってましたね。ギンコが吸っているタバコはヌイに教わったもの。「蟲はただそれぞれが在るように在るだけ」という信条もヌイから受け継いだものです。記憶をなくしても、ヌイから受けた愛情は、生きる力のようなものになってギンコの中で生きているんですね。
今回も本当にいい話で、ヌイの愛情とヨキの思慕には涙が溢れてきました。
